A catastrophic collapse occurred on Teton Pass, Wyoming, where a significant portion of the highway gave way, leading to its closure indefinitely. This event resulted in a major disruption as a crucial mountain pass linking Idaho and Wyoming was obliterated by a landslide.

The collapse was described as a “catastrophic failure” of Wyoming Highway 22 over Teton Pass, with a massive section of the road washing down the mountain. Officials have taken the necessary steps to close the road following this incident. The closure of Teton Pass highway has significant implications for commuters who rely on this route, leading to a major transportation challenge in the region.

A major collapse of Wyoming Highway 22 over Teton Pass happened overnight Friday, sending a huge section of the road down the mountain. This crucial route between Jackson and Victor, Idaho, is expected to be closed for weeks, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).

Catastrophic

No vehicles were on the road since it had been closed earlier on Friday due to a mudslide.

The trouble started on Thursday when a large crack was spotted stretching across both lanes.

A significant portion of the highway at milepost 12.8 has fallen into the ravine below, and much of the remaining road is cracked and tilted. WYDOT says the road will be closed indefinitely.

“We’re looking at a few weeks at least,” Stephanie Harsha, a spokeswoman for WYDOT District 3, told Cowboy State Daily on Saturday morning. “Right now, a temporary fix or any kind of detour would be just as difficult and costly as rebuilding the road or finding a more permanent solution. Our engineers are weighing those options now.”

Early Signs of Trouble

Teton Pass was temporarily closed on Thursday so WYDOT could patch the large crack reported earlier that day. When road crews checked the damaged section on Friday, the patch had been damaged and more movement was detected.

“That landslide kept moving despite our efforts to create a temporary detour around it,” Harsha said. “That movement ended up taking out both lanes of travel in that section.”

WYDOT road crews tried to fix the damage and work on a long-term solution. They were on the scene overnight when the landslide hit. “Our crews were working in the area last night to build that detour,” she said. “Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no equipment was damaged, but the road is so damaged that I don’t think a quick fix or detour is possible.”
