IMD Alert Details

The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi until 8:30 am today, followed by an orange alert for the next 24 hours. “Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in North Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, and NCR in the next two hours,” the IMD stated.

The weather department predicts that rainy conditions will continue until August 5. In addition to Delhi, other areas of the NCR have experienced thunderstorms and light rain.

Incidents Due to Heavy Rain

Continuous rain on Wednesday evening led to the collapse of a house in north Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi area. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. The incident occurred around 9 pm near Robin Cinema, close to Ghanta Ghar.

Initial reports indicate that at least five fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to commence rescue operations. “We received a call at 8:57 pm regarding the collapse of a house in the Sabzi Mandi area near Robin Cinema. Five fire tenders were sent to the location,” an official reported. No injuries or casualties have been reported thus far.

In a separate incident, a school wall collapsed in the Daryaganj area. Images from the scene show debris from the collapsed wall damaging several cars parked nearby.

Traffic Disruptions

Heavy rain has led to significant traffic disruptions in several areas of the city. Vehicular movement was hampered on the Outer Ring Road in the direction from Chirag Delhi towards Nehru Place due to waterlogging under the Savitri flyover, according to police.

Waterlogging at Chatta Rail Chowk impacted traffic on Syama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, with traffic being diverted from Chatta Rail’s red light and Lothian Road. Commuters traveling from NS Marg towards ISBT Kashmiri Gate are advised to take Kodia Pul, Mori Gate Boulevard Road. Traffic on Mahatma Gandhi Marg was also affected due to waterlogging at Nigam Bodh Ghat, leading to diversions from Chandgi Ram Akhara.

Weather Department Advisory

Delhi recorded over 100 millimeters of rainfall in one hour, prompting the weather office to issue a red warning. According to the IMD’s Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network, the Pragati Maidan observatory in central Delhi recorded 112.5 mm of rainfall in one hour.

The weather department has advised people to stay indoors, secure windows and doors, and avoid unnecessary travel. “Seeking safe shelter and avoiding tree cover are recommended to mitigate risks. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops,” the advisory stated.
