The Hunger Games is a highly popular young adult dystopian novel series written by Suzanne Collins. The series has received widespread acclaim for its themes of survival, rebellion, and government control. The author has announced that a new Hunger Games book will be released in 2025, which is sure to excite fans of the series.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” is the latest novel in Collins’s popular series, which amassed a devoted fanbase. It will also be turned into a film.
Sixteen years ago, the author Suzanne Collins first introduced readers to a dystopian society where young individuals battled gladiator-style to their deaths, creating a blockbuster series that garnered a worldwide following and a multibillion-dollar film franchise.
Now Ms. Collins is returning with a prequel set many years before the original “Hunger Games” book.
Scholastic revealed on Thursday that the novel, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” would be released on March 18, 2025.
- “Sunrise on the Reaping” will also be transformed into a movie, scheduled for release on Nov. 20, 2026, and produced by Lionsgate, the company behind the adaptations of Ms. Collins’s other “Hunger Games” novels.
- According to Scholastic, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will transport readers back to Panem, a post-apocalyptic territory comprised of 12 districts that was once North America but was ravaged by conflict and climate change. The narrative begins on the morning of the reaping (the event in which contestants are selected from each district) of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The novel is set 24 years prior to the events of the initial “Hunger Games” book.
- In a statement released on Thursday, Ms. Collins mentioned she was influenced by the Scottish Enlightenment thinker David Hume’s “concepts on implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the ease with which the many are ruled by the few.
- “The tale also allowed for an in-depth exploration of propaganda and the power of those who control the story,” Ms. Collins stated. “The question ‘Real or not real?’ appears increasingly urgent to me each day.”
- The “Hunger Games” is the initial book in a trilogy that was published in 2008. The series also includes “Catching Fire,” the second book, published in 2009, and “Mockingjay,” the third part, released in 2010.
- In 2015, Ms. Collins announced she was departing from “Hunger Games” after her third book, telling fans, “After spending the last ten years in Panem, it’s time to explore other worlds.” However, Ms. Collins resumed writing and published the series’s fourth book, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” in 2020.
- The first four books have sold over 100 million copies globally and have been translated into more than 50 languages, according to Scholastic. They have also been adapted into five major films. The series captivated a multitude of fans, largely drawn to its rebellious teenage heroine, Katniss Everdeen, portrayed in the films by Jennifer Lawrence, with her distinctive braid, bow and arrow, sense of loyalty, and dedication to justice.
