The fourth phase of voting in India’s general election is underway in 96 seats across nine states and one union territory.
The first three phases of the extensive vote were held on April 19, April 26, and May 7. The outcomes will be revealed on June 4.
The elections primarily pit the National Democratic Alliance, led by two-term Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), against the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, led by the main opposition Indian National Congress party.
There are approximately 969 million registered voters to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, in the largest democratic exercise globally over six weeks.

Key constituencies: Indore, Madhya Pradesh state
This constituency, a stronghold of the BJP, has been in the spotlight for unexpected reasons.

Congress candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew from the race at the eleventh hour, after the deadline for candidates to file nominations had passed. The Congress could not nominate a replacement, and Bam subsequently joined the BJP.

Thirteen other candidates are competing, but the Congress has urged voters to choose NOTA (none of the above) in protest.
