“Star Wars: The Acolyte” is an upcoming television series set in the Star Wars universe. It is being developed for the streaming service Disney+ by writer and creator Leslye Headland. The show is set to focus on the dark side of the Force and will explore the emergence of the Sith in the final days of the High Republic era. The Acolyte is expected to delve into themes of power, corruption, and the struggle between light and dark. Fans are eagerly anticipating this new addition to the Star Wars franchise for its unique take on the galaxy far, far away.
The initial episode unveiled a surprising co-lead of the series, someone the star and the creator expected would be revealed long before the show’s premiere.
If you examine enough trailers and promotional clips, you’ll begin to notice the intricate game that trailer editors sometimes play, especially with franchises as famously secretive as Star Wars. Naturally, any subtle hints become most apparent when watching marketing materials after you’ve finally seen the show in question.
In the case of the Leslye Headland-created and Amandla Stenberg-led The Acolyte, our initial peek at their mystery-thriller series presented a few lines that were sure to catch attention. In March, when The Acolyte’s official trailer was released,
It commenced with Lee Jung-jae’s Master Sol addressing a group of Jedi younglings by saying, “Close your eyes. Your eyes can deceive you. We must not trust them.” That’s when this writer speculated that Lee’s character was also giving meta advice to the viewers about the Disney+ series’ overarching narrative.
As we now know from yesterday’s two-episode premiere, The Acolyte’s marketing was indeed executing a long con by keeping the co-lead character of the entire show under wraps. Instead of Stenberg merely portraying Mae, the vengeful assassin targeting Jedi from her past, she also plays Mae’s twin, Osha, a space mechanic (or meknek in Star Wars terms), who is wrongfully accused of committing Mae’s Jedi murders due to their shared resemblance.
The twin sisters were separated 16 years earlier for reasons that will soon become clear, and needless to say, Stenberg and Headland are amazed that the character of Osha remained a secret to most of the audience.
